EcoVend Reverse Vending Machines have been designed in the UK to work with various deposit return schemes (DRS) issuing reward vouchers or digital credits. These machines are also recognised with DRSI Standards in Ireland, and offer a number of benefits for businesses when installed:
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) introduced by Re-turn will came into effect in Ireland in February 2024. This initiative calls for businesses and consumers to review their current recycling methods and implement new measures for the scheme.
The DRS incorporates reverse vending machines (RVMs) to facilitate improved recycling efforts in Ireland – particularly in plastics recycling. By introducing RVMs and associated incentives, the nation aims to achieve its goal of separately collecting 90% of plastic beverage bottles by 2025.
The scheme specifically covers PET bottles, as well as aluminium and steel cans with volumes ranging from 150ml to 3 litres. Businesses should also ensure that they incorporate RVMs that are approved for the Irish DRS scheme, such as the EcoVend range supplied by LSM Ireland. Find out more about the scheme and benefits for businesses through the Re-turn website.
Reverse vending machines are perfectly designed for ‘on the go’ usage, and the higher public engagement with the machines is proven to achieve recycling rates of up to 95% – a much improved result against conventional recycling methods that have a success rate of about 60%.
Norway, Germany, Croatia, Estonia, Sweden and Finland already have effective bottle deposit return schemes in place with up to 97% of waste recycled. Lithuania has managed to achieve a 93% return rate in just three years.
In the US, at least eight states have statistics showing that due to a deposit scheme, beverage-related litter has been reduced by between 70% and 84%.
Iceland supermarkets reported a daily average of 2583 bottles recycled through reverse vending machines across five trial sites, with an average of £250 in coupons refunded per day.
Reverse vending machines are very user-friendly, and easy to set up and use.
Retailers introducing a reverse vending machine to their organisational recycling efforts can expect to avail of many benefits from their new addition:
Reverse vending machines also offer opportunities for addition incremental revenue – digital screen sizes from 17″ to 65″ and backlit side panels offer perfect opportunities for branding and advertising across the range.
And, as with all LSM products, you’ll also have access to product user training, 1 year’s warranty with regular maintenance checks, and services when required.
